A project focused on food education , born in response to the pandemic and the need to bring environmental issues back to the forefront. This is a need that deserves investment, starting with preschool children, the first level of education in the Italian school system.
For this reason, at the end of 2020, the administration decided to support a private partner who was behind the creation of the first and, so far, only Outdoor Educational Park in the area for school-age children. This led to the ORTOgrafia , whose name plays on the word "orto" (garden), that part of the home garden that our grandparents and, later, our parents used to grow vegetables for family consumption. Today, when produce is sold pre-washed, children may no longer know how to grow a vegetable, even in a small town like Alba.
In the summer of 2021, the project began a pilot phase, involving three private preschools in the city. The educational program was structured into three phases: a first outing to the garden of Enrico Crippa, a three-Michelin-starred chef at the Piazza Duomo restaurant in Alba, to visit the greenhouse where the produce served by the chef comes from; a second outing to the Educational Park, where the children explored the issues related to managing a garden; and a third outing took place in the school's cafeterias to learn how the meals are prepared.
Following the success of the summer 2021 test phase, work has been done to consolidate the ORTOgrafia initiative, also expanding it to include a series of activities that have now become established as part of the children's offerings during events in the city: spaces where tomorrow's adults can learn about the products of the land where they live.
The project is currently undergoing a natural evolution, shifting its focus towards greater attention to plants and the forest, the designated place where truffles grow.
