Elio Germano and Teho Teardo – the dream of something
(freely adapted from Pier Paolo Paolini's masterpiece)
9:00 PM
Elio Germano and Teho Teardo stage The Dream of a Thing in a version of words and music.
Three Friulian youths on the verge of their twenties live their brief youth confronting the world: the poverty of their rural origins, emigration, political struggles, until their integration into the bourgeois society of the economic boom. They long for happiness, the good life in a foreign country, develop a political conscience and dream of revolution, only to submit to the compromises of adulthood. Until they die of work.
Pasolini speaks to us through the voices of those who, exhausted by poverty, fled post-World War II Italy, crossing the border illegally to reach Yugoslavia, drawn by communism and hoping to find decent work and food for all.
Seen today, it is a sort of Balkan route in reverse, crossing the same border that refugees currently use to reach Italy.
Perhaps we have forgotten, but there was a time, not long ago, when we were the ones resorting to smugglers.
