In the historic center of Alba, the Cortile della Maddalena is a large porticoed space that today functions as the city's cultural "citadel": it is home to the "Giovanni Ferrero" Civic Library, the "Federico Eusebio" Civic Museum of Archaeology and Natural Sciences, the MUDET – Truffle Museum , and the Civic Music Institute.
Born as a religious complex (the former Convent of the Maddalena is attested from the fifteenth century) and transformed over the centuries, it dialogues with the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, rebuilt in the eighteenth century to a design by Bernardo Antonio Vittone.
The library, established in 1960, is now the hub of the Langhe Library System; the museum, founded in 1897, moved here in 1976. Today, the courtyard is a popular place for readings, visits, and events; in the autumn, it also becomes one of the hubs of the Alba International White Truffle Fair.
