Church of San Giuseppe
Monday to Friday: 2.30pm – 5.30pm
Saturday and Sunday: 10.00am – 1.00pm and 2.30pm – 6.30pm
The church of San Giuseppe was founded by the Alba Pilgrims' Company, which commissioned its construction in 1642 and officially opened in 1656. The building has a single nave with a barrel vault, later enriched by four side chapels: among these, the Chapel of the Crucifix stands out, which housed a unique crucifix with movable arms, carried in procession during the Intierro.
Beneath the chapel's steps lies an archaeological museum featuring the remains of a Roman theater and a medieval tower; excavations have also revealed traces of wooden huts, typical of late-antique Alba. The unmistakable bell tower, crowned by an onion dome and oval windows created by filling in previous openings, is open to visitors and, with approximately 200 steps, leads to a beloved panoramic viewpoint over the city. Inside, the Baroque opulence interacts with modern works, transforming the church into a sort of art gallery. Finally, a room is dedicated to the "Righteous of Alba," including Father Girotti, "Righteous Among the Nations" for his assistance to Jewish families during Nazi persecution.
Entrance to the church and the climb to the bell tower are often linked to reservations for the "Alba Sotterranea" tours, managed by Ambiente & Cultura, which uses the church as an information point during the winter months and offers paid archaeological tours with specific costs and reservations.
