The Church of San Domenico is among Alba's most iconic buildings: imposing and austere, it stands next to the classical high school, in spaces that once belonged to the monastery. Commissioned by the Dominicans, who had been in the city since the 12th century, it retains an early Gothic style evident in the façade, punctuated by four buttresses that recall the division into three naves. Of interest is the splayed portal, with sandstone and brick columns; the pointed arch frames the lunette with the Virgin and Child, flanked by Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Dominic.

Inside, the columns support cross vaults and show traces of black and white decorations, linked to the colors of the order and models from Orvieto and Siena; despite the renovations, 14th and 15th-century frescoes remain. There is also an early 20th-century sculpture by Leonardo Bistolfi: originally intended as a funerary monument, it was donated by President Luigi Einaudi to the city in memory of those who fell during the Liberation.

Concerts, painting and sculpture exhibitions and various events are held there.

Contrary to what many people of Alba think, the Church is still consecrated even though the Eucharist is not preserved there and Mass is sometimes celebrated there.

The Church of San Domenico is often used for exhibitions and cultural events, so it's essential to check the updated opening hours on the Famija Albèisa website or call the information office.

If you wish to visit this monument outside of these hours, please contact us well in advance.
