The Cathedral of Alba
The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the mother church of Alba and the principal place of worship in the diocese. Its origins date back thousands of years: it stands on the eastern side of the forum of ancient Alba Pompeia, where massive Roman walls have been discovered; below ground, the archaeological area of the Diocesan Museum preserves other late Roman and early medieval traces.
Dedicated to Saint Lawrence, it recalls the Cathedral of Chieri in its Romanesque-Gothic style and interior decorations (horizontal bands, lobed pilasters, and blue cross vaults). The terracotta façade was remodeled in the 19th century and enriched with a rose window and statues. The interior reflects centuries of expansions and reconstructions; the presbytery features a wooden choir and a polychrome marble high altar, as well as the altarpiece of Saint Lawrence.
Before leaving, the large Lingiardi organ from 1876 on the counter-façade deserves attention.
