Fondazione Banca d'Alba presents to the public the precious cast of Michelangelo's Vatican Pietà , exhibited at Palazzo Banca d'Alba .
The exhibition, promoted under the patronage of the St. Peter's Factory in the Vatican , the Diocese of Alba and the Ministry of Culture , offers the unique opportunity to approach a masterpiece of exceptional documentary and artistic value, precisely in the year of the 550th anniversary of Michelangelo's birth .
The great artist created the famous sculpture in 1498 , at just 23 years old, working for a whole year on a single block of marble.
The cast, which for over sixty years did not leave St. Peter's Basilica and which now arrives in Alba as a precious guest, was made by Francesco Mercatali in 1942 , during the Second World War, and proved fundamental in the restoration of the original work after the dramatic attack of 1972.
For this reason, what arrives in Alba today is not a simple copy, but a physical reminder of Michelangelo's work, a witness that has spanned history and contributed to the rebirth of the Pietà.
The public will be welcomed by a finely crafted exhibition that will engage the eyes, mind, and heart, extolling the beauty of the Pietà and drawing guests into its incredible history.
